Electropalatograph
An electropalatograph
(also termed palatometer) is an instrument that records the timing and location
of tongue contact with the hard palate during continuous speech.
The technique requires the speaker to wear an artificial palate that is moulded
to fit the roof of the mouth.
Tongue-palate contact is recorded by a number of silver or gold contacts located
on the lingual surface of the artificial palate (also termed pseudopalate).
The artificial palate plugs into a multiplexer unit which is hung around the
neck of the speaker. The multiplexer unit is connected to an EPG3 scanner
that is in turn connected to a serial port interface unit which plugs into
the serial port in the back of a PC.
The computer then runs software which allows the tongue-palate contact patterns
to be displayed live or recorded along with acoustic recording and laryngograph
